He works hard in his job – nine hours a day, plus at least two hours of commuting to and fro – 11 hard hours from the time Jim leaves work in the morning until he gets home. And he’s getting deeper into debt every week. And he hates his job and his boss. He’s tired of living in No Man’s Land – working harder to earn less and less as inflation and taxes eat away at his paycheck.

And then, one day, he meets Derek, who tells him he can earn really good money working from home – $5,000 a week is being achieved! Jim will be able to attend his kids’ sports events, earn enough to get a new car and take his long-suffering wife on a well deserved holiday, and regain his self respect. Jim gets excited. He discusses it with his wife. Then he gets fired. It wasn’t expected and they have no savings.

“Never mind, Jim,” says Derek, “You can focus on your home based business now and make a lot more money to boot!” So Jim gets business cards printed and sets up his home office and tells all and sundry he’s about to make it big. No more $5,000 per month for him, no! He’s going for $5,000 per week! So he gets to work.

Two months down the line, Jim is in such financial trouble that he has to sell his house, and, of course, he tells Derek that he was ripped off. This home based business doesn’t work! He was lied to! It’s a Ponzi Scheme! He would have been better off getting another job! Fire and brimstone! He might even SUE Derek, and the company, and the company dog and the owner’s ex wife and neighbour and distant cousins.

When Jim calms down a bit, Derek has a little “Come to Jesus” talk with him:

“Jim, it took you four years of training to get qualified to get your job. And the result, after another year, was $5,000 per month for 11 hours a day, six days a week. Instead of starting your business on a part time basis, as I suggested, you were forced to go full time immediately (because you lost your job.)

“Then, you admit that you worked on average three hours a day, five days a week in your home based business. And you expected to be earning four times what you earned in your job within about six weeks. Six years and 11 hours a day, six days a week to get to $5,000 per month = six weeks and 3 hours a day five days a week to get to $5,000 per week? Don’t you think perhaps that is a little unreasonable?”

And THAT, my friends, is the problem with most Home Based Business owners. Your own, home based business, no matter which one it is, is a full time thing or a part time commitment. Real entrepreneurs work very hard, much harder then they would in a job, because they are prepared to do now what others won’t so that they can have in the future what others don’t.

They are not lazy. They don’t make excuses. They don’t cast blame; they take responsibility. They are teachable and very, very serious about what they do. Those are the one that rise to the top.
