If you got into your car and drove for a hundred miles, you would arrive somewhere. Where will you choose to arrive? In twelve weeks, you will arrive. In six months, you will surely arrive. Unless you’re dead, you will arrive. The question is, what state will you be in, what will your life look like, in twelve weeks? Which ship will you board?

Many people prefer to have someone else choose their destination for them. They like to be passengers, even if the car is headed into a volcano. They don’t like the responsibility of making a decision and sticking to it. They want their boss or their spouse or the media or some slick and sick politician or a kid to choose their destination for them. How about you?

Some people hate the idea of being responsible for the consequences of their choices, so instead of playing hockey or football or tennis themselves, they sit on the couch and get fat and shout directions at the real men who discipline themselves and practice and work hard and make millions for themselves and their families, and win or lose, their families are proud of them, and deservedly so. Two men start out on a journey: one starts to resume work at the job he hates, for a boss he despises, doing work that bores him, and the other starts his own business or finds a new job. In six months time, their lives can be diametrically opposite.

We chose to immigrate from South Africa to Canada in 1997. Others mocked us. Today, with South Africa in ruins with no future and no hope, they are suffering the consequences of their cowardice and delusion.
