I saw a “motivational” post on Facebook today: “Don’t lose hope, you never know what tomorrow will bring.” Is that really true?

Perhaps new opportunities will come calling, and even that is subject to a rule. There is a rule that determines most of what tomorrow will bring, outside of the usual acts of God and the offchance that you will receive a call like the one I did in late May. Want to know what the rule is?

Here’s the rule: What you have done today and in the past is what tomorrow will bring. You sow, you will reap – good and bad alike. “Sow to the wind, reap from the whirlwind.” And there is also an accumulation of choices – the straw that breaks the camel’s back, the critical mass – and that often brings those “unexpected” windfalls or disasters.

There are exceptions, of course, like illness and death and accidents and floods – acts of God – but most of the time, you can pretty much predict what tomorrow will bring. We knowthat “Luck” is when preparation meets opportunity.

That’s how to predict what tomorrow will bring. It’s not a mystery, and most of the time it’s pretty predictable. We are creating our futures today, with every word, thought, deed, and decision. Even when things happen to us that we didn’t cause and cannot control, our preparation in learning to manage our emotions and the skills we have learnt can stand us in good stead; it’s not what happens to us, but how we react to it that counts.
